Sample Lessons: Just two of the many art activities that our students experience.

Grade Two Worry Warrior Project

Picture

The art department and the guidance department collaborate to offer this clay project for grade two students.  Students read the poem ‘What If…” by Shel Silverstein and discuss the problem of “worries”.  Students explore and practice strategies that help to alleviate their worries and then build their “Worry Warriors”.  When the child has a worry, he or she can write it on a slip of paper and place it in the Worry Warrior’s mouth.  The Warrior will hold the worry and take care of it so that the child can relax and enjoy being a kid.

Students in grade 5 engage in a unit on Japanese art forms and traditions.  Students create traditional Gyotaku fish prints and Sumi-e brush painting.  Students review the process of writing a Haiku poem and are asked to write a Haiku to accompany their Japanese style art.
