How Do We Assess Children's Artwork?

Student Assessment in the Visual Arts

Evaluating student artwork requires a thoughtful approach.  It is my firm belief, upheld by my experience, that all children can succeed in the art room.  There are many forms that this success can take...as many as there are children themselves.  When assessing student work, I consider three criteria.  These are:
  •  Content (has the child shown evidence of learning what has been taught?)
  • Creativity (Has the child taken risks with her work?  Has she used her own unique point of view to articulate her idea?)
  • Craftsmanship (Taking into account the child's age and development, has he used the materials appropriately and effectively?)

In order for children to succeed, they must have an understanding of what the expectations are.  Every lesson that is taught in the art room is illustrated on a display board.  This display not only reminds children of what they are learning but also reinforces why they are learning it and what they will be creating.
