Classroom Expectations

Art Room Rules                          The Mona Lisa Project

We only have two rules in the art room.  Fortunately, they cover everything we need to think about in terms of behavior and work habits.

Rule Number One:
 Be Nice

This means be nice to each other, to Mrs. Rotty, to the art room and supplies, and to yourself.

Rule Number Two:
Work Hard

Art is fun for most of us but it can be hard work, too!  There are times when a learning process is frustrating or difficult and it is tempting to do less than your best. When this occurs, it is important to remember that hard work pays off in every area of the curriculum.  Art making is about taking risks and being willing to try something that might be unpredictable in its results.  Being a hard worker is the only way to experience  progress and gain a greater feeling of satisfaction in your artwork.

Can your class earn a Mona Lisa?

Each week when a class comes to the art room they are given a rating based on conduct, cooperation and work habits.  Each class will take a slip of paper back to their classroom teacher that communicates just how well the class behaved.  The coveted "Mona Lisa" is the one that every class wants.  Classes that are extremely well behaved and demonstrate good art room citizenship receive a Mona Lisa slip.  When this happens, the class gets to move one mile on the "Mona Lisa Miles" poster.

Classes that are well behaved but have some room for improvement, receive a "Thinker".  Before the class leaves we discuss the things that they need to "think about" so that they can get a Mona Lisa the following week.

When a class is having a very difficult time following the art room rules, they might receive the dreaded "Scream".  Sadly, when this happens (and it is rare) the class must move back one mile on the Mona Lisa Miles poster.

At the end of the year, the class at each grade level that has traveled the most miles on the poster, will be awarded a special art related privilege.  Students can help their class on an individual basis, as well!   If I catch a student being especially kind or helpful, I will have them put their name in the
Book of Excellence.  When a class has five names in the book, they receive and extra Mona Lisa mile!
